Aurinkobaletti

AB Dance Company

_____________________________________________________________________

AB Dance Company (Aurinkobaletti) started in 1981 as a neoclassical group, but nowadays the repertoire includes a wide range of contemporary styles, aimed for both adult spectators and for children.

Urmas Poolamets, an Estonian dancer-choreographer and a member of the Aurinkobaletti Ensemble since 1998, was named the artistic director of the company in autumn 2006. Poolamets and Raija Lehmussaari, the founder of the AB Dance Company and a long time artistic director have composed the majority of the group’s choreographies.

The company also invites a visiting choreographer annually. It has offered a stage for many international choreographers such as Carolyn Carlson, Kilina Crémona, Andrew de Groat, Boris Eifman, Virpi Pahkinen, Sasha Pepelyaev, Juha Vanhakartano and appreciated Finnish choreographers like Sanna Kekäläinen, Tommi Kitti, Kirsi Monni, Ari Numminen and Tuomo Railo. Guest choreographers 2010 are Marjo Kuusela and Arja Raatikainen.

The home stage of the AB Dance Company is at the Manilla Quarters in Turku. Situated in a beautifully restored unique old factory milieu, The Manilla Theatre is also the site of the annual art festival Manifesti. The AB Dance Company tours throughout Finland and performs regularly abroad. Company’s performances have been seen, for example, in Croatia, Estonia, Germany, Hong Kong, Denmark, Latvia, Poland, Russia and Sweden.
